Disambiguation of Tonally Unspecified Mandarin Syllables
نویسندگان
چکیده
The interpretation of written Mandarin monosyllables presented in tonally unspecified pinyin was investigated for 22 native speakers. Results showed a preference for high relative lexical frequency and, to a lesser extent low homophone density candidates, with some interaction between these two factors: where one candidate in a homophone cohort had a particularly high frequency, cohort density was found to play little or no role in selection. Where the frequency of the two most frequent candidates was comparable, characters from lower density tonal homophone cohorts were preferred. These results indicate a strong role for relative lexical frequency and, through the weaker homophone density effect a lesser role for tone, in Mandarin homophone disambiguation.

An acoustic study of the interaction between stressed and unstressed syllables in spoken Mandarin
This study examines the acoustic correlates of relative prominence in connected Mandarin speech, particularly those acoustic manifestations that reveal an interaction between stressed and unstressed syllables. The acoustic measurements are primarily concerned with segment duration, intensity, and F0. This study shows that: (1) stressed CV syllables have significantly longer consonant and vowel ...
متن کاملAcoustic characteristics of English lexical stress produced by native Mandarin speakers.
Native speakers of Mandarin Chinese have difficulty producing native-like English stress contrasts. Acoustically, English lexical stress is multidimensional, involving manipulation of fundamental frequency (F0), duration, intensity and vowel quality. Errors in any or all of these correlates could interfere with perception of the stress contrast, but it is unknown which correlates are most probl...
متن کاملSyllabic reduction in Mandarin and English speech.
This study examined whether language specific properties may lead to cross-language differences in the degree of phonetic reduction. Rates of syllabic reduction (defined here as reduction in which the number of syllables pronounced is less than expected based on canonical form) in English and Mandarin were compared. The rate of syllabic reduction was higher in Mandarin than English. Regardless ...
متن کاملFeatures of contracted syllables of spontaneous Mandarin
Mandarin is a syllable-timed language whose syllable structure is quite simple [1]. In spontaneous Mandarin, because of rapid speech rate the structure of syllable may be changed, phonemes may be reduced and syllable boundaries as well as lexical tones may be merged. This fact has long been noticed, but no quantified empirical data were actually presented in the literature until now. This paper...
متن کاملWord structure and tone perception in Mandarin
This paper presents results concerning the relationship between word structure in terms of number of syllables and tonal realization in Mandarin. It examines whether the fact that a word (in our context a prosodic word) is more complex implies certain tonal reductions. Our hypothesis is that a monosyllabic word will be uttered more carefully than a polysyllabic word due to the potentially large...
